Producer: | Niepoorts Quinta de Nápolez tres high above the Rio Tedo, a tributary of the Douro in Cima Corgo, the middle section of the Douro wine region. The family business, founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, is one of the small, fine port wine producers. Dirk Niepoort today leads the company with his sister Verena in 5th generation. He is considered an important oenological voice of Portugal. Since joining the company in 1987, Dirk has been pursuing a second line: the table wines. It is thanks to him and his wealth of ideas that the Douro Valley enjoys an excellent reputation as a wine region today. |
Region: | This wild and beautiful landscape in northern Portugal offers exceptionally good grape varieties, terraced slopes along the Douro River and hills that stretches to the horizon. The terraces, favored by ideal climatic conditions, are flooded by the sun, which heats the pure slate and granite soil that is typical in this region. However, life is not so easy for the winemakers on the Douro: the roots of the vines are pushed down and grow through the rocks to look for the scarce water supplies, while the slate absorbs the heat and then radiates it. Wine experts around the world have recognized that the Douro region offers ideal conditions for producing non-fortified red and white wines of the highest quality. |
Variety: | Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional |
production | Grapes were harvested at optimum maturity, with high acidity and balanced sugar grades. After the selection on delivery to the cellar, the grapes were completely de-stemmed. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, where the berries spent 8 to 15 days on the mash. 15% of the wine was aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels. |
tasting note: | The color is lively, with medium intensity. The aroma is very expressive and shows fresh and floral notes, dominated by the so typical of the Douro Valley balsamic accents. On the palate, the wine is elegant, lively and dignified without being cumbersome, with a distinctly mineral character. With its harmony and elegance, this wine represents just that uncomplicated style that is so dear to our hearts. |
