Description

Producer : It all started in 1875 with tobacco in the Poschchiavin village of Zalende near the Italian border with the city of Tirano. Tobacco dried out the mouth and so it was obvious that something liquid had to be made. Since then, two names have been combined to form one term: Veltliner & Zanolari. But never with your own vines.  The wines from the Nebbiolo variety have always been bought by Zanolari as a young wine and after completed in their own wine cellar. In 1880 the company was relocated to the Graubünden capital Chur because the location was much better suited for business development and expansion.  There were probably only a few Swiss households and restaurants where there was no box of Zanolari Chur wine in the 1950s to 1980s. Zanolari still selects and buys the wines on site. Our goal is not to make dense and concentrated southern Italians from the fine Nebbiolo. But color, fruit and a subtle use of barriques are required. And we never forget the big story - the labels always reflect elements that have already been on the market. The wines are bottled in Val Poschiavo, Mese and the Bündner Herrschaft.
Region: The Valtellina is experiencing a real renaissance, but few wine lovers have noticed this so far. The region is climatically extremely favored for high-quality viticulture. The Nebbiolo grape feels at home on the granite floors of the steep terraces. A light wind rushes through the Valtellina almost every day and dries the grapes after wet nights, so the putrefaction is almost a foreign word in this region. The quality level is very high and the notorious * liter qualities * are a thing of the past. Valtellina, much praised since Roman times, is one of the few places outside of Piedmont where the Nebbiolo grape thrives. The Veltlin is the second largest producer of Nebbiolo grapes after Piedmont.
Grape variety : Nebbiolo
Manufacture : 15-day mash fermentation in steel tanks and aging in 3000 liter oak barrels from France for 12 months. A minimal part is "flavored" in barriques for 6 months and is added again at the end. The wine is still on the bottle for 10 months. The "Stäga" is a significant name and the first bottles with this name were filled in Chur as early as 1895. The oldest example with us dates from the wine year 1924. The new appearance was realized in April 2014.
Degustationsnotiz: Dark garnet red. Deep, spicy bouquet of dark berries & little cedarwood. Balanced, elegant palate with delicate fruit and sweet aromas. Long, full finish.
Drinkability : year + 7 years
Enjoy: Large pieces of beef and veal. Then poultry prepared in one piece. Hearty stews. Grilled vegetables. Cheese may not be too mature with fruit jam or honey. A crispy fresh rösti fried in butter with cheese and bacon. Raw ham from the wild boar, a flatbread and some cheese are enough = simple food and great wine.
