Producer: | Cusumano on the Etna: New winery, old vineyards - that's how you could describe the project of the two brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano. And what they get out of the soils and the vines, that is already considered in Sicily as a benchmark for the modern quality wine growing in Sicily. The brothers have secured 18 hectares of fillets in five different locations on Etna: Guardiola, Feudo Di Mezzo, Solicchiata, Pietramarina and Verzella. The vineyards are located from 650 to 1100 meters above the sea. The Cusumanos are known for their enthusiasm and passion for their homeland and for being big fans of the indigenous grape varieties of Sicily. So it is not surprising that at Alta Mora they work almost exclusively with the two - naturally autochthonous - varieties Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. |
Region | Sicily's wine growing region naturally includes the island of Sicily itself, then Pantelleria and the northern Aeolian Islands. Marsala is probably the most famous wine of the island and is made of the variety Cataratto. The hot and dry climate, the meager soils of volcanic rock and the many slopes are ideal for growing wine. Once again, it was the Greeks who taught the islanders ancient craftsmanship in the eighth century BC. The original Sicilian variety is the Nero d'Avola from the area of the city of Avola. But the Syrah, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the white Grillo and Chardonnay are more common. It was only in the last 20 years that the bridge to nationwide quality viticulture was successfully broken. |
