Producer: | Hannes Reeh from Lake Neusiedl in Austria is an unconventional winemaker - he maintains a carefree lifestyle and yet pursues his ideas purposefully. On our first visit with him, we met a simply likable guy. In his wines, his personality is found: an exciting mix of tradition, New World experience, belief in the future and Burgenland roots. With much impartiality, he does what he enjoys, and is successful. The soils in Andau, where the grapes of Hannes thrive, are sparse and produce wines that convince with power, fullness and maturity. "Unplugged" - borrowed from the world of music - calls Hannes his wines, which he creates without much frills, but with a feeling for the tact of nature. This is pure nature: without fining agents, without enzymes, without bred yeasts or unnecessary filtrations - "Just Unplugged!". |
Region: | The climate in Burgenland is characterized by cold, snow-poor winters, hot, dry summers and a long, mild autumn. Lake Neusiedl acts as a climate regulator. Its surface softens the most extreme temperatures and thus creates ideal conditions for viticulture. The wine region Burgenland in Austria is divided into four wine regions. These are Neusiedlersee, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, Mittelburgenland and Südburgenland. |
Variety: | Zweigelt - this can also be called Blauer Zweigelt or Rotburger. It was bred in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt (1888 - 1964) from St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Until 1975, it was known under Rotburger and in the course of the Qualitätsweinrebensorten-Regulation in Zweigelt unnamed. |
production | Read by hand and subsequent spontaneous fermentation in INOX stainless steel tank. This Zweigelt is being developed in used and new barrels. His "unplugged" wines are, as he put it, "produced without any bells and whistles, but with a great sense of the tact of nature." That means: no pure yeasts for the fermentation, no enzymes, no fining agents and in good years also no filtration. |
tasting note: | Red cherries, elderberry and spicy rosewood in the nose; Very elegant and fresh on the palate, fine extract with lots of pressure, rich tannins, nougat, plums, mint and a hint of cloves, in the berry final then tobacco and coffee notes. Long spicy finish. Has development potential. |
Maturity: | Vintage + 5 years and optimum drinking temperature between 16° C to 18° Celsius. Please also note that a wine warmed by about 1 to 2 degrees when pouring into the glass. |
Enjoy: | The Zweigelt of Hannes goes with or without food. A Plättli fits perfectly. But just as all the game including terrines and soup. For example from Burgenland Esterhazy roast beef, goulash. Also our local sausage with rösti harmonizes perfectly. |
awards: | Winner Falstaff Zweigelt Grand Prix 2014 |
