Description

Meinrad Perler was born in 1937 as the son of a Freiburg farmer. As a young adult, however, he had no intention of following his father's agricultural path as a farmer. On the contrary, he became a banker. In the early 1960s, he moved to Ticino as the young director of what is now Credit Suisse. In 1981, when he was 45 years old, he was supposed to sell an old, disused winery and hill, on which it stood, and the 11 hectares of vineyards around it for his employer. In fact, he sold the property, but to himself, because he had fallen in love with this spot of earth from the first moment. The circle was closed and the farmer's son became a farmer, a wine farmer. Many years of construction followed, until 1994, when the first Merlot left the basement after Meinrad's taste. In 2010 Meinrad was able to reap the laurels of decades of service when he was named Swiss Winegrower of the Year at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse. All grapes are located around the winery in the municipality of Arzo and also in Genestrerio. A sun-drenched place far away from the hectic Mendrisio. And a world heritage is in close proximity. Monte San Giorgio is one of the most important fossil deposits in the world from a geological period between 247 and 236 million years ago. The fossils of this mountain are world famous for their diversity and their unique preservation. They have been brought to light and examined by Swiss and Italian paleontologists since 1850.

Region: The long history of viticulture in Ticino goes back to the time of the Roman Empire. Understandable, since the main trade routes in antiquity led through Ticino via the Gotthard to Central Europe. The first records already exist in the writings of Pliny the Elder around 79 AD In Ticino, the sun room of Switzerland, over 80% of the rows of vines are stocked with the French Bordeaux grape Merlot. Pinot Noir, Bondola, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Diolinoir and Gamaret are also widespread, but in tiny amounts. The white varieties are Chardonnay and Chasselas that dominate. The region can be divided into two parts, the Sopraceneri, north of Monte Ceneri and the south Sottoceneri. In Sopraceneri, the soils are sandy but still permeable to water, with a high proportion of organic substances. In southern Sottoceneri, the soils are heavier, interspersed with more clay and therefore less permeable to water. The Val Mesolcina / Misox also belong to Ticino in terms of viticulture.
Grape variety : Merlot
Manufacture : Classic pressing in steel tanks. Maceration time: 14 days. What does steel tank pressing mean? The mash is cooled down and the start of fermentation is delayed by a few days. This enables the extraction of the fruit flavors. The yeast is added and this mash is then fermented in stainless steel tanks.
Degustationsnotiz: A classic Ticino Merlot from the municipality of Genestrerio. Very modern pressed, but without the typicality of its origin. In the bouquet ripe plums and cherries, a mineral note is added as well as a little cold smoke and a spicy tone; soft on the palate, juicy in the body, in the aroma an invigorating fresh note, raspberries, cassis and also dark chocolate, balanced, ripe tannins, dense finish with good length.
Drinkability : year + 5 years
Enjoy: meat - it just goes very well with it. Grilled Halloumi is delicious. Or a Dorädli in aluminum foil. A wonderful companion of grilled lamb skewers, juicy steaks with herbs.
